Q4 kicks off and requests start coming in from your manager and other teams at the same time. When your plate is already full and more work lands on it, this article covers how to explain your workload, ask your manager to prioritize, and push a deadline back.

单元一｜先把工作量讲出来

新任务进来时，第一件事是讲清楚手头现在有什么。bandwidth 指你还剩多少时间与心力，是美式职场口语最常用来讲这件事的词。

常用句	I don’t have the bandwidth.	The team is at capacity.

on my plate 指手头已经有的工作，plate 前面固定用 on，说 I have three deadlines on my plate this week。

跟领导或提出请求的同事这样说

I don’t have the bandwidth to take this on right now.	我现在没有余力接这件。
I’ve got a lot on my plate this week.	我这周手头的事很多。
My team is at capacity through Friday.	我们组到周五都没有多余人力。
Can I walk you through what’s already on my plate?	我把手头的东西跟你过一遍好吗？
Here’s everything that’s due this week.	这是这周要交的全部。

单元二｜请领导排顺序

把新任务和手头的旧任务放在一起，请对方决定先做哪一个，动词用 prioritize。

trade-off 是取舍。接了新的，旧的就会往后延，把这个交换讲出来，让领导决定要哪一个。

I’m too busy.	我太忙了	Can you help me prioritize between these two?	可以帮我排一下这两件的先后吗？
I’ll try.	我尽量	If I take this on, the report moves to next week.	如果我接这件，报告就要延到下周。
Maybe.	再看看	What’s the trade-off you’re okay with?	你可以接受的取舍是什么？
It’s a lot.	这也太多了吧	Which one do you want first?	你要我先做哪一件？

单元三｜把期限往后推

push back 后面接期限，就是把期限往后推。

extension 是延期，动词搭配 ask for，说 ask for a two-day extension。

turnaround 是完成一件事需要的时间，说 a 48-hour turnaround。

改期这样说

Can we push the deadline back to Friday?	期限可以往后推到周五吗？
I’d like to ask for a two-day extension.	我想申请延两天。
This report normally takes a 48-hour turnaround.	这份报告通常要两天才做得完。
Is there any flexibility on the due date?	交付日期有调整的空间吗？
I’ll need two more days to get it right.	我需要再两天才能做好。

用法提醒｜push back 和 push back on

push back the deadline ＝把期限往后推，讲的是时间。
push back on the request ＝对这个要求表达不同意，讲的是立场。
宾语决定意思：后面直接接时间就是改期，接 on ＋人或事就是反对。

单元四｜真的要退回

take on 是承接新任务，说 I can’t take on another project this month。

decline 偏正式，用在写给不熟的对接人的 email。美式口语在会议或 Teams 消息上更常用 pass。

退回这样说

I’m not able to take this on this month.	我这个月没办法接这件。
I’m going to have to pass on this one.	这件我得婉拒（口头）。
We’ll have to decline this request for now.	这个需求我们目前无法承接（书面）。
I’d have to push back on the timeline.	时间安排这点我得提出不同意见。
Can we revisit this after the launch?	上线之后我们再谈这件好吗？

单元五｜给一个做得到的时间

realistically 放在句首，先讲实际情况，再给一个做得到的时间点。

收尾这样说

Realistically, I can get it to you by Friday.	实际来说，我周五可以给你。
I can start on it Thursday at the earliest.	我最快周四可以开始。
I can give you a rough draft now and the full version next week.	我可以先给草稿，完整版下周给。
Let me confirm the timeline and get back to you today.	我确认一下时间安排，今天回复你。

B　We’ll have to decline this request for now.

C　I refuse this request.

正解：B — decline 用在正式书信。A 的 pass 是口语，场合在会议或内部消息。C 的 refuse 带对抗语气，职场往来不用。
